You’re a compassionate person, but it seems that everything is preventing you from providing the care you want to. The healthcare system is broken, and it’s breaking your heart. The need for compassion and empathy has never been more important.

We can’t go back to the way it was, but how do we move forward? Compassion is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. How can we bring more compassion into our care, given all the constraints we find ourselves under?

I get it. I’ve been there. I can help!

Compassion Centered C.A.R.E.

A shift in perspective can bring your job as a front line nurse manager into focus.
That shift is putting compassion at the center of everything you do.

The approach of these courses is a new care delivery model – Compassion Centered C.A.R.E.
Compassion needs to be centered for ourselves, our co-workers, and our patients. By using the four-step process C.A.R.E. we can act in alignment with our values, and takes the needs, priorities, and world view of ourselves, our co-workers, and our patients into account.

I’m Cheryl Barnes-Neff. I've worked in healthcare from NICU to hospice, and everywhere I've worked, I've seen the importance of compassionate care. I also understand that we nurses want to know, not just how we feel, but what we should do. I've been teaching about how to "do" compassion for years

I've been a Registered Nurse for over forty years, and have decades of management and quality improvement experience. I’ve taught many nurse leaders to be successful, and I’m looking forward to working with you, too!

How does Compassion Centered C.A.R.E. work?

Patient Centered Care Model

Patient Centered Care

While Patient Centered Care is a step in the right direction, as you can see from the diagram above, with the patient in the center of care, we're doing things to the patient, not with the patient. While the intention is good, we are left out of the equation, and the system doesn't take the staff into consideration. Patient needs are not always met.

Compassion Centered C.A.R.E. Model

Compassion Centered C.A.R.E.

With Compassion Centered C.A.R.E., compassion is in the center of the model. This means that everyone in the model is deserving of dignity and respect - every member of the team is treated with compassion. We ask each other "What matters to you?" We listen to the answers, and act in alignment with their priorities, preferences, and world view.

This model will work with any current care model or charting system your facility is currently using. Because it’s a shift in focus rather than a charting process or policy, you can put the steps into practice today!

Compassion Centered Model

You’ll feel the difference immediately…

  • You’ll go home at the end of your shift without feeling drained of energy. You’ll be tired, of course – you work hard! But you’ll have that feeling of satisfaction in a job well done.

  • Your staff will feel accomplished at pulling together a plan of care that is actually meaningful, and something their patients can follow.

  • Your staff will begin the process of developing a team of respected colleagues. They will have pride in themselves and their unit.

  • Your patients will feel heard, understood, and respected. They will know that whatever happens, you and your staff care about them and will give them the best possible care.

  • Rather than being frustrated and thinking of going back to the bedside, you know that you are extending your reach and becoming an outstanding nurse leader.
