Money Back Guarantee
For the sale of certain products, the Company provides a money-back guarantee. That money-back guarantee is governed by the following terms, except to the extent that the terms of a specific product or service provide otherwise.

That email must contain information about the product you purchased, the date of the purchase, and the email and name associated with any such purchase. Upon determining that you are entitled to a refund pursuant to this policy, the Company will promptly issue an instruction to its payment processor to issue the refund. The Company does not control its payment processor and will not be able to expedite any refunds.

CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION, EXTENDED UNIT 2011-2012 | ORLANDO, FL
Completed an extended unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) with an emphasis on hospice patients. This unit included 100 hours of classroom education, and 300 hours of clinical, supervised work as a chaplain. Currently working part time to support new hire orientation, inservice programs, and performance improvement initiatives. WHAT MATTERS TO ME
While I don’t wear purple or a red hat, I have come to the point in life that I say and do what I really feel and believe. My goal is to put what I do best to work. What I do best is to help my clients achieve their goals to increase their emotional intelligence, increase their happiness and wellbeing, and to apply those skills in their work and life.
I believe in radical compassion. Compassion is not a feeling, it’s an intention and action. But because we think compassion is a feeling, we don’t ever consider that we need to learn how to be compassionate. In teaching, or healthcare, or any number of professions, it is common to be told to put up a wall between ourselves and others – after all, you’ll burn out, right? What we’re not taught is that we’re turning the profession and work that we love into something that is hurting, not helping. But when we ask each other “What matters to you?” and listen carefully to the answer, whether it’s our family, our customers, our students, or our patients, we learn how to give them the best possible care.
Treating each other with compassion and dignity will change the world. You and I can be part of that. When teaching new hospice staff, student chaplains, or coaching my clients, the bottom line is to always find out what matters to them first. When those needs are identified and met within ourselves, we then have the resiliency to take what we have learned and help unlock that in others.
What I do with all of my programs and teaching, is to put you first. I help you learn how you can use specific strategies to find out what matters to your patients or students. That’s the point. That’s when learning has a goal and an achievable outcome. Knowing what matters is the key to having true compassion for others. All of us, in whatever work we do, have an opportunity to do that work with radical compassion.
I hope we can work together sometime soon.
LEARNING CENTERED STATEMENT
The shocking statement I often use is: “Education doesn’t change behavior.” Because I work primarily in staff development for healthcare professionals, the example I use is asking what they should do when they see physicians, nurses, and even respiratory therapists outside smoking. What would the reaction be, if the assumption is that education does change behavior were true, and you approached the group to educate them on the dangers of smoking? Would they crush out their cigarettes, never to smoke again, or should you duck in case someone takes a swing at your nose?
Education is, of course, crucial. I am a firm believer in lifelong learning. But how do we help people apply their knowledge, whether it’s in the work environment or their everyday lives?
When working with a patient or teaching new hires in the hospice environment, my favorite question to ask is: “What do I need to know about you as a person, to give you the best possible care?” The reason I ask this question is to engage the patient and find out not only what is wrong with them, but what is important to them. For students, this principle is just as important. The student should learn from the teacher, of course, but the students can learn from each other, and the teacher can learn from the students, too. In healthcare, we often talk about patient centered care but sometimes forget to include staff centered learning to our staff development plans. While there are times new material must be taught, it is equally important to involve staff in determining what topics, skills, and other materials are needed and wanted.
In staff development, my approach has been to distill down new material to no more than a thirty minute didactic portion, and then to use thirty minutes with the staff in dyads or small groups to practice the material. A “What I Need to Do” (or W.I.N.D. sheet) accompanies the teaching: a single page that gives the basic points, bullet points that list what the staff need to do regarding the topic with their patients, how to chart, and resources for learning more about the topic. The managers are tasked with evaluating if the staff have changed their practice patterns, and what impact this is having on patient care. We meet with the staff regularly until the staff is comfortable with the new material, and an adequate degree of competency has been reached. The goal is to establish connection for the staff with the staff development group, their peers, their manager, and their patients. By knowing what they need to do for their patient, having a chance to work with new material with their peers, having confidence that their manager will support and coach them in the new tasks, they have a much stronger connection to learning. They develop competence in an integrated way, and is far more likely to not only stick, but to be applied to other aspects of their care of their patients.
My goal in working with students would be to apply similar principles of learner centered instruction, allowing students to begin the process of establishing learning connections to last a lifetime.
